[STYLE SCHOOL] Starting With the Items Least Worn
Wear What You Ignore: A Habit Shift for a Fresh Wardrobe
This challenge is exactly what it sounds like… look around your closet and find the things you barely or never wear and use those as a starting point for your outfits. Sounds easy enough right? Well, let’s look at why this matters:
This challenge is simple, but it’s something we rarely do. When we get dressed, out of habit, we reach for the same pieces over and over. This challenge flips that. Look around your closet and find something, whether it’s a top, bottom, jewelry, shoes, or anything else, that you almost never wear. Start with that piece and build an outfit around it.
You’ll discover one of two things: either you’ll uncover a hidden gem to incorporate into your go-to outfits, OR you’ll realize why you don’t wear it. Maybe it doesn’t fit quite right, it’s no longer your style, or you’re just not vibing with it. If that’s the case, you can pass it along or donate it to someone who will love it.
Every time I use the ‘Start with the Thing Least Worn’ concept, I’m ALWAYS surprised by what I find! Whenever I feel bored with my closet, I try this and magic happens!
TWO THINGS TO REMEMBER:
Give yourself grace and time to learn.
At first, don’t try this challenge when you’re rushing to get dressed in the morning, it will only lead to frustration and giving-up too easy. Instead, set aside time to experiment and explore. Give yourself a chance.Never feel like you have to do the challenges in order. You can do some and not do others. You can pick and choose for those that speak to you or you can go fully-in and challenge yourself to all of them (to be honest, this is the way you will see the biggest results). Never feel pressured, I just want you to feel inspired!
This is a challenge I CONSISTENTLY DO for myself to help me find new combos in my closet and create more magic out of what I have. Pretty simple right?
Don’t forget to… DOCUMENT!
Always take a picture of your outfit and save it in your “What to Wear” album on your phone. Remember, don’t worry about how you look in the photo (you can even cut off your head in the picture if you’re getting too hung up on it) just save it so you can reference it on rushed mornings!
